When Katie is at a real low after her dog suddenly dies, she decides to take a walk, but she's so distracted by her grief that she almost steps out in front of a moving car. She hears someone say "stop!" and grab her shoulder, pulling her back to the sidewalk. This is the first moment that Angela enters her life. After some explanation and some demonstrations that yes, Angela can do angel-type stuff, and that no, other people can't see her, Angela talks Katie into going over to Dustin's house. Once there, "spooky stuff" starts to happen as they talk, which is actually the invisible Angela checking out Dustin's place. As the series continues, Angela helps Katie out of predicaments, protects her from a gunpoint robbery, figures out and solves Katie's constant bad luck (spoiler -- it's demon trouble!), and eventually becomes her closest friend and companion - who still occasionally knocks things off shelves at the wrong moment.
